When we talk about smartphone or tablet processors, we often think of Qualcomm and the must-have Snapdragon firmly installed in our cherished devices. But would it be to forget the fierce competition between the different manufacturers and at this little game there, MediaTek surprises with a high-end SoC 64 bits that could overshadow the biggest?
The SoC that should be most present in this year’s flasgships should be the Snapdragon 810, but other actors are watching. One thinks of course of Samsung and its home solution Exynos which is gaining more and more to be known. MediaTek, on the other hand, is best known for these entry-level processors, but that was before.
With the MT6795, the manufacturer openly targets the high-end market and intends to shake up the established order. These are essentially the thoughts that come to us when we discover the latest performances of the SoC spotted on GeekBench. The latter show themselves … (click to enlarge).
Specifically, in the single-core test, the famous MT6795 gets a nice score of 886 points. The same multi-core test then peaks at 4536 points. Not bad, when you know that the Snapdragon 810 is in the same conditions 1144 and then 4345 in the second test. It seems that the two SoCs are neck and neck on the tests. This bodes well for MediaTek, which used to be a Petit Poucet in the field.
As always, benchmarks are to be put into perspective. In the case of the Snapdragon 810, these come from an LG G Flex 2, while those of the MT6795 come from an unknown smartphone. The latter also has 3GB of RAM and Android Lollipop while the LG G Flex 2 is content with 2GB and a screen definition in full HD 1080p.
What should we learn from these feats? MediaTek openly targets the high end while seeking to seduce Qualcomm’s disappointed manufacturers. In China, for example, Snapdragon’s recent setbacks could push several manufacturers to equip themselves with alternative solutions with equivalent performance. So the stakes are high.
