A few days ago, we could discover the specifications of the MediaTek Helio X20, the chip manufacturer’s first 10-core processor. Today, the first information about one of Qualcomm’s next Soc, the Snapdragon 818, has leaked and it is also expected to be equipped with ten hearts.
MediaTek is preparing a new Soc with ten hearts.
Unlike The next MediaTek Soc, which will have two A72 cores and eight A53 cores, The Snapdragon 818 should incorporate a set of four A72 cores clocked at 2 Ghz for the heaviest tasks, two A53 cores clocked at 1.6 Ghz for intermediate tasks and four other A53 cores clocked at 1.2 Ghz for the lightest tasks. Still engraved in 20 nanometers, the processor should be accompanied by an Adreno 532 GPU.
As can be read black and white on the Soc’s technical sheet, the Snapdragon 818 should incorporate a Category 10 4G LTE modem. For RAM, you will have to rely on the LPDDR4 RAM. For comparison, the MediaTek Helio X20 is limited to LPDDR3 RAM.
According to STSJ Gadgets, the information comes directly from Qualcomm, however, for the time being, the chip is only in the project stage and there is no evidence that it will really see the light of day. In addition, its specifications have plenty of time to change by the time it is released, if at all, if it ever comes on the market.
Although the specifications outlined above are rather enticing on paper, one still wonders if the arrival of a new Soc engraved in 20 nanometers would really make sense. Announced at MWC 2015, the Snapdragon 820 will be equipped with Kryo home cores and is expected to benefit from the input of Samsung’s FinFET 14-nanometer engraving process, delivering a chip that is both more powerful and more energy efficient.
