Snapdragon 820: Qualcomm introduces its Adreno 530 graphics chip

During the SIGGRAPH trade show currently taking place in the United States, Qualcomm has just unveiled two new models for its GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) respectively called Adreno 510 and 530. If the manufacturer is rather stingy in information, they still dwelled a little on the Adreno 530 that will equip the Snapdragon 820.

The adreno 530 is therefore the graphic chip that will be part of the Snapdragon 820, expected by everyone at the turn. The Adreno 510, meanwhile, did not have much information revealed. It will equip the Snapdragon 620 and 618.

Qualcomm has announced that the first SoC-equipped aircraft will be available in the first half of 2016. Information counteracts the idea that one of the next Nexus would be equipped with the 820… unless an exit is postponed at the same time.

Introducing the Snapdragon 820

Qualcomm began its presentation with the schematic representation (above) of the quad-core SoC. Note the rather imposing presence of the GPU compared to that of the Kryo processor, total creation of the manufacturer replacing the Cortex A53 and A57 equipping the current Snapdragon 810.

A fast and thrifty SoC

Compared to the previous model of the Adreno 430, the 530 would offer a 40% increase in speed and a similar decrease in energy consumption for the same level of use. This last point is crucial when we know the vagaries encountered by the autonomy of a smartphone with abilities always pushed back.

This optimization is not only due to the new Adreno 530 but perhaps it is also due to the fact that the engraving of the 820 was made with the FinFET process? No confirmation has been made. The SoC will also be adorned with Qualcomm Spectra, a brand new ISP, because Qualcomm has put a lot of emphasis on photography.

Photography

The manufacturer announces that a giant leap has been taken since the last generation of Adreno 400. With the new 14-bit Spectra ISP capable of managing HD-DSLR photography. Present in the 530 but not in the 510, Qualcomm announces that it wants to take smartphone photography to the next level by getting rid of the constraints it has encountered before.

Spectra will therefore allow in addition to the management of 25 Megapixel devices (or 2 x 13 Megapixels), improved noise reduction, exposure, compatibility with zig-zag video capture in HD definition, ever finer corrections and improved autofocus. It will of course be up to the smartphone manufacturer to take advantage of these capabilities.

The Adreno 530 features a new display engine and features all the typical features of a high-end chip in 2016.  Finally hosting an HDMI 2.0 connector,it will include a 4K display in 60 Hz.

Other functions are likely to be announced later. The Kryo processor is one of the shadows that we would like to be able to explore a little more in the coming months, not to mention this desire to use Artificial Intelligence for the operation of the SoC.
