Xiaomi outperformed Apple and Samsung and ranked first in monthly smartphone sales worldwide, according to data from market research firm Counterpoint. In June 2021, the Chinese company had 17.1% of the market, against 15.7% of the South Korean brand and 14.3% of the iPhone manufacturer.
In addition to gaining unprecedented leadership, Xiaomi achieved a growth of 26% over the previous month, the largest variation between May and June of all manufacturers. It was also number 2 in the second quarter of 2021, with 53 million handsets shipped, second only to Apple.
The data reinforces the news last month, when consultancy Canalys already showed strong growth in the Chinese company.
You’ve certainly heard someone say that Xiaomi’s handsets do much more than competitors and cost cheaper – it may be until you’re one of the people who say it. But there are other reasons that explain the achievement of the Chinese company.
How Xiaomi outperformed competitors in June
One is precisely the decline of another company in the same country: Huawei. Since u.S. government sanctions, which have put the company in trouble for not having access to features like Qualcomm chips and Google apps, it has been losing market space.
Xiaomi is the one who has been taking advantage of the gap left. “The manufacturer [Xiaomi] has been expanding in the markets bequeathed by Huawei and Honor, such as China, Europe, the Middle East and Africa,” tarun pathak, counterpoint’s research director, said in a press release.
Another point that contributed were Samsung’s supply difficulties. A swell of COVID-19 cases in Vietnam caused problems in the production of the South Korean brand, affecting distribution and sales.
“Xiaomi, with its strong portfolio of intermediate handsets and broad market coverage, was the biggest beneficiary of the short-term gap left by Samsung’s A-series,” says senior analyst Varun Mishra. This factor, incidentally, is temporary and can be reversed in favor of the manufacturer of the Galaxy line in the coming months.
Finally, the 618 sales festival, held on June 18 (hence its name) in China, also gave a little forcinha for the company. According to Mishra, the company had an aggressive offline expansion in smaller cities in the country and achieved good commercial performance with the Redmi 9, Redmi Note 9 and Redmi K lines.
