Earlier this year, Samsung Display unveiled an OLED display panel that can be rolled up into a smaller format. It could actually happen that Samsung launches a smartphone that uses an OLED screen of this type, and it could also do so relatively quickly. Although there have been a lot of rumors about it, a new rumor claims to have more details about the first device of this kind. Leaker Revegnus (@Tech_Reve) claims that Samsung will launch a smartphone with a rollable OLED screen by 2025.
If this information turns out to be correct, the company could unveil the phone along with the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7 in the second half of the year, if the same name and cadence is maintained. The leaker claims that the rollable screen smartphone will have an improved under-panel camera (UPC), which means it won’t have any cropping for the front component. It is also stated that the device will have very minimal edges, which could indicate that it will have a bezel-less display. Not much else is known about this alleged device.
In recent years, Samsung has increasingly perfected its foldables with the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold series, but the company may want to focus on further innovative form factors for the mobile segment, such as smartphones that can turn into tablets with rollable screens, or even dual-fold screens. In fact, alongside the current rumors there are also rumors about the arrival of a possible device with two hinges that can transform from phone to tablet.
As for a possible rollable OLED screen, we know that the panel presented by Samsung Display can expand up to a 12.4-inch display when necessary, it also has a built-in motor that rolls up and unrolls the flexible OLED screen. Samsung has several patents related to technologies of this kind, so until more detailed rumors emerge it will be difficult to understand what direction the Korean company intends to take.
