PlayStation 5 Slim, internet connection required to enable optical drive

Already spotted in some stores in the version bundled with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the PlayStation 5 Slim model, arriving on November 10 in the USA and Japan under the name PS5s, boasts two firsts: that of being the first Sony console with an external optical drive, which can therefore be purchased later or disassembled and replaced, and to be the first PlayStation to require an internet connection during installation.

The images of the console that appeared on the net, in fact, also show a small wording on the box that warns of the need for an online check to match the external Blu-Ray drive to the console on which it is mounted. And it’s a procedure that we assume serves to make it impossible to use readers with modified firmware or third-party players, thus preventing the sale of unofficial optical drives and hindering piracy.

The words printed on the console’s packaging, however, indicate that you only need to do it once. As a result, once the two devices are paired, you should always be able to use the PlayStation 5 Slim even in offline mode.

PlayStation 5 Slim, here all the features, is almost identical to PS5, even in shape. However, it differs in size, which goes from 9.2 to 8 centimeters in thickness, from 39 to 35.8 centimeters in height and from 26 to 21.6 centimeters in depth. And that’s enough for an overall volume reduction of about 30%.

Otherwise, as it is obvious that it is a more advanced version of the console even if not in terms of power, it does not decrease the price. In fact, it remains at €449.99 for the version without disc and €549.99 for the version with Blu-Ray optical drive. In addition, buying the player at a later time involves a higher expense considering that purchased individually costs 119.99 euros. And it is necessary to take into account, if you want to keep the console vertically, the purchase of the special base which costs 29.99 euros.
