The latest range of Google smartphones, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, has introduced a feature that may have gone unnoticed even though in fact it could prove very useful: Let’s talk about the eSIM migration tool developed by Google.
Thanks to it, users can easily transfer their eSIMs from older Android devices to their new Pixel 8 model, but above all it is also possible to convert traditional physical SIM cards to the new format.
As early eSIM users know, switching between eSIM models has never been easy, despite the fact that most high-end devices have been offering this technology for several years. There are those who have dared, like Apple, which has even launched the iPhone 14 as a device exclusively capable of working with eSIM, arousing some controversy towards a choice that many have called “early”
How did the process work in the past? The migration of an eSIM involved deactivating the one in the previous smartphone, followed by subsequent activation on the new device. In most cases it was not possible to complete everything independently and it was necessary to contact an operator of our mobile network provider.
This new tool is heading in the right direction, as it aims to significantly streamline the process, especially the conversion of an existing physical SIM into an eSIM profile. But it is not all roses, in fact, it is very likely that the operation is linked to certain operators, at least in the initial phases. As for compatibility, we naturally only talk about the latest arrivals at Google, namely Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.
What about other Android smartphones? It’s still uncertain whether the migration tool will work on non-Pixel devices, and compatibility with network operators is just as nebulous, and it could also happen that some carriers decide to charge an eSIM transfer fee. In short, google has created the basis for simplifying the processes, but now it will be necessary to understand if in fact everything will actually be so simple.
