LG has just presented at the SIA show in Los Angeles, its new generation of OLED TVs, and in particular a 77″ UHD transparent screen that can be rolled up like a poster. The latter is crossed by 40% of the light rays and can be curled to form a tube 80 mm in diameter. LG is not at its first steamscreen: the Korean brand had already presented a 65″ screen at CES 2018 and IFA 2017.
LG has unveiled a brand new 77″ OLED screen that is both transparent and winding at the Society for Information Display Week (SID) in Las Vegas. This screen, the price of which is not known or denies the date of marketing, is of UHD definition (3840×2160 px) has a transmission (fraction of the light flow capable of crossing it) of 40% and a curvature of 80R – it can be wrapped in a tube 80 mm in diameter. We know that LG had been developing this screen since June 2017.
LG: a 77″ OLED UHD screen that can be rolled up like a poster
At the time LG specified that this technology was not directly intended for the general public, but rather for distribution in B2B: these panels would be ideal for example for commercial signage, augmented reality or to create smart windshields for cars, which one imagines luxury. Flexible and transparent OLED screens are still quite expensive to manufacture. At a meeting at IFA 2017 several interlocutors told us about prices that number in the tens of thousands of euros for simply transparent screens.
However, with economies of scale, technology could eventually become democratized. LG is already positioning itself as the master of the sector. The manufacturer had already presented a 77-inch flexible screen at CES 2018. Two years earlier, LG demonstrated an 18-inch wrapable screen. Technology seems to be moving fast… still to bring down manufacturing costs! By the way, if these screens were very cheap, how would you use them in your home? Share your ideas in the comments!
