After turning into WcDonald’s in the United States and Canada in reference to fake manga signs, the fast-food restaurant proposes a new collaboration inspired by Japanese animation.
McDonald’s relies on these types of events in its restaurants around the world, but it is often in Japan that the most surprising operations take place. Maybe you’ve already seen the animated ad campaign to promote the company’s job openings, or the collaboration with the movie Suzume. This time it’s Studio Ghibli’s turn to lend one of its licenses to the fast food giant.
McDonald’s Japan has just unveiled a series of commercials starring young Kiki from the 1989 feature film Kiki the Little Witch.
The home delivery service of the little protagonist seems to have inspired the fast food chain for a new range of “European-style” burgers. Just like the world of Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s is reminiscent of some Alsatian and German towns. This is how the heroine turns into the unexpected muse of three new “Europa Burgers” to be discovered in Japanese stores from June 26. If you’re going on holiday in Japan this summer, here are the Ghibli burgers you can try on site.
Since the Japanese idealize Europe as we idealize their green lands, these brand new menus will surprise Western customers. A first course “German Potato Burger” offers a fun recipe based on potatoes. Between two slices of a square sandwich are a slice of cheddar, a beef steak on a bed of potatoes, all accompanied by onion and mustard sauce.
A second, more classic recipe proposes a “Peperon Juicy Hot Chicken Burger” consisting of breaded chicken seasoned with pepper, covered with lettuce and garlic mayonnaise sauce. The trailer for this burger insists on the “juicy” side of the meat to make our mouths water, but what will happen in the restaurant?
