After months of rumors and speculation, Sony has finally officially announced the arrival of the VRR feature on PlayStation 5. The Japanese next-gen console will receive an update that will introduce it later this week and Sony has communicated all the details in a new post on the official PlayStation blog.
The first important news concerns the denial of a rumor circulated in recent months, according to which the initial support for VRR would have been guaranteed only for Sony Bravia TVs, something that is not reported in the official post. Reportedly, the feature will be compatible with all monitors and TVs equipped with an HDMI 2.1 port with VRR support (remember that the recent change in nomenclature has created confusion about it).
Recall that the VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) allows the TV or monitor to synchronize the refresh rate of the panel with that of the video signal output from the console, so as to have a 1:1 correspondence between the refresh rate and the frames generated every second by the GPU. Doing so limits visual artifacts such as tearing or frame pacing problems.
SUPPORTED GAMES
Sony has also published a list of the first games that will offer full support for vrr functionality, announcing that the titles listed will receive a dedicated update very soon. As for the next games, however, vrR support should be present already from day one, so the optimization work concerns only the titles already on the market.
In addition to being able to count on a list of games already optimized for the function, the update also includes an entry that allows you to force the VRR even on those not optimized. In this case Sony reports that unexpected behavior may occur, so it is up to the player to choose whether to activate it or not, waiting for a dedicated patch to be released. At the moment the list of supported games includes:
Astro’s Playroom
Call of Duty: Vanguard
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
Destiny 2
Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
DIRT 5
Godfall
Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Resident Evil Village
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
Tribes of Midgard
