Qualcomm unveils its Snapdragon 820: 14 nm and 4G engraving category 12 to 600 Mbps

Qualcomm has finally officially lifted the veil on its Snadragon 820 processor as part of its New York conference, revealing the final details and confirming most of the rumors.

More power and no more overheating!

With the Snapdragon 820, Qualcomm is once again offering quad core architecture. In addition, this is its first original 64 Bit architecture. By this we mean that he uses his own hearts and not those developed by ARM, as within the Snapdragon 810. Four custom cores named Kryo that will offer a reduced energy consumption of 30%, compared to the Snapdragon 810.

A big plus for autonomy but also for temperature management. The problems of overheating of the Snapdragon 810 will soon be a bad memory thanks to the fine engraving of the Soc. The Snapdragon 820 will be engraved in 14 nanometers by Samsung where the 2015 model was still engraved in 20 nanometers by TSMC. An engraving that improves not only energy efficiency but also performance. In addition, the DSP Hexagon 680 will optimize the Soc’s energy consumption to boost autonomy.

Better graphics and better photos

For its part, the Adreno 530 GPU promises to offer performance and energy efficiency 40% higher than its predecessor proposed and will be optimized for displaying games on Quad HD screens of the high-end 2016. But that’s not all because the Soc will also improve the performance of the photo sensors of our smartphones thanks to its IPS Spectra which supports photo sensors up to 28 Megapixels, hybrid autofocus and offers tons of improvements, in terms of image processing.

From 4G Category 12 to 600 Mbps

In terms of connectivity, the Snapdragon 820 is flawless and incorporates a Category 12 4G modem, a theoretical speed of 600 Mbps in downloaders (twice as much as Category 6 4G modems) and 150 Mbps in upload. A modem that will be 33% more efficient and 15% more energy efficient than that of the 810. In addition, it will also offer 802.11ac MU-MIMO Wi-Fi and 802.11ad Wi-Fi for ever faster speeds. Connectivity that According to Qualcomm is still unmatched.

The Snapdragon 820 coming soon to our smartphones

The Snapdragon 820 will be the high-end processor of 2016. It is expected to be found on the Samsung Galaxy S7 which will be announced in January as well as on most of the high-end Android announced next year. In addition, it could make its arrival very quickly because it is also the one that is supposed to feed the Xiaomi Mi5 which should be announced in early December.
