Samsung starts production of UFS 3.1 automotive memory

Samsung has announced the start of mass production of the new UFS 3.1 memories for the automotive industry, a sector that for more than a few years now has an increasing number of points of contact with consumer technology. So here are the new UFS 3.1 memories optimized for infotelematics systems and ADAS, for which Samsung ensures lower power consumption than those of the previous generation.

The UFS 3.1 automotive memory range consists of 128, 256 or 512 GB modules. For the middle version, the 256 GB one, Samsung estimates that consumption between one generation and another has decreased by about 33% to the benefit of advanced applications, therefore self-driving vehicles and / or electric propulsion. The 256GB model offers:

700MB/s sequential write speed
2,000 MB/s (or 2 GB/s) sequential read speed
and, in fact, about 33% lower consumption than the previous generation.

“Samsung’s new UFS 3.1 memory addresses a wide range of customer needs for optimized IVI systems, driving forward next-generation memory trends that require higher ESG standards,” said Hyunduk Cho, Vice President of Memory Product Planning Team at Samsung Electronics. We aim to increase our presence in the automotive semiconductor market following the introduction of our UFS 3.1 memory for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Someone has probably already wondered: why specific supports for cars, when UFS 3.1 memories and also UFS 4.0 for smartphones and derivatives Samsung already has them on the list, and also for some time? Simple, storage media for smartphones, tablets and company are not very suitable for automotive due to the fact that they are subjected to quite different stresses, also and above all thermal.”

Samsung’s automotive memories, for example, are AEC-Q100 Grade2 certified, that is, they are able to operate, and while maintaining the performance level almost constant, between -40 and 105 degrees Celsius, a wide thermal range substantially double that of a smartphone, whose full functionality is normally guaranteed between 0 and 45/50 degrees Celsius. Samsung plans to send the first examples of the new UFS 3.1 memory to manufacturers by the end of the year.
