Samsung to integrate its own graphics chips with SoC Exynos

We already hear fans of the Korean manufacturer gloating at this announcement. After going it alone since 2010 to design its processors via the production of SoC Exynos, a little innocuous information would have just been revealed by the company’s roadmap, crystallizing Samsung’s desires for independence.

It was a roadmap announcing the firm’s plans for 2017-2018 that contained the information: Samsung plans to start producing graphics chips to integrate them with SoC Exynos. The announcement is in itself rather interesting when you know the quality of its processors, you only have to see the latest, the Exynos M1 nicknamed “Mongoose” and its benchmarks.

The case is not yet ready to be settled because in order to carry out its project alone, Samsung will first have to meet a need, that of using a Heterogeneous Architecture System (HSA) within its processors. Thanks to this heterogeneity, the processor (CPU) and the graphics chip (GPU) will be located on the same bus (a circuit transmission line).

The two neighbouring components would be able to share their memories but also their tasks. In short, a smartphone running this HSA chip would be much faster and more graphic; Samsung’s roadmap, this smartphone could be released within two years. To be more precise, the integration of these chips would be gradual. First, the GPU would remain a Mali chip and then, during the period 2017-2018, the SoC Exynos equipped with a GPU from Samsung would arrive.

This is not the first time we have heard of Samsung’s desire to integrate its own graphics chips into its processors, as it was already discussed in 2014. Other rumours predicted production for mid-2015 but none of this happened. For now, we should see the production of two more processors equipped with Mali chips. We will keep you informed as soon as we learn more.
