Launched a year ago, the Snapdragon 615 processor is designed for mid-range terminals and offers pretty good performance. It consists of eight A53 cores and is therefore based on a 64 Bit set of instructions. Soon the succession will be provided by a new Soc, the Snapdragon 616 expected aboard the Huawei Maimang 4, as confirmed by Qualcomm at the end of July.

The Snapdragon 616 will boost mid-range smartphones.
Today, the phone in question and its Snapdragon 616 processor have just switched to the anTuTu benchmak tool, getting a score of 31,015 points. This is a far cry from the results obtained by Soc for high-end mobiles, however, by comparison, the Snapdragon 615 does not go beyond 26,000 points. A difference that could potentially be due to a higher frequency for one of the two A53 clusters.
At the heart of the game, the Soc consists of two clusters of four A53 cores clocked at 1.2 and 1.7 Ghz respectively (compared to 1 and 1.7 Ghz in Snapdragon 615). There is also an Adreno 405 GPU and an X5 LTE modem compatible with Category 4G networks. Relatively powerful, the Soc supports Quad HD screens, photo sensors of up to 21 megapixels and video encoding in Full HD 1080 format at 60 fps allowing manufacturers to offer stronger “mid ranges”.
Over the past few months, mid-range smartphones have become increasingly ambitious, thanks in large part to Chinese manufacturers. This trend could increase over the next few months and into 2016. As for the Soc itself, with the IFA fast approaching, we have a good chance of seeing it land in other smartphones soon.
