In recent years, manufacturers have continued to increase the number of cores found in our smartphones. After a Snapdragon 801 and a four-core S805, Qualcomm has offered a Snapdragon 810 consisting of eight cores (four A57 cores and four A53 cores) for the high end of 2015. In the first months of 2016, a snapdragon 820 made up of four cores will take over and the chip manufacturer explains today why it decided to opt for four cores instead of eight.

While MediaTek recently raised the stakes by incorporating no less than ten cores into its Helio X20 processor, Qualcomm has taken a different path by reducing the number of cores embedded in its Snapdragon 820. A decision on which the company’s executives decided to unravel the mystery in a recent interview. As Qualcomm stated, this decision is linked to a desire to prioritize quality and user experience over the quantity of hearts.
With the Snapdragon 820, Qualcomm seeks to focus on both single core performance and multi-core efficiency and offer better optimization through its Adreno 530 GPU and DSP Hexagon 680, which will boost the battery life of smartphones that will be equipped with this new Soc.
According to Qualcomm, using four good quality cores instead of eight low-end cores resultsin better overall performance. At this level, it is worth clarifying, once again, that the company uses its own personalized hearts. This is his first original 64-bit hearts, the Kryo. The package will be combined with new technologies such as the DSP Hexagon 680, in order to improve the user experience and this is precisely the objective of the company.
Of course, we will have to wait for the arrival of the first smartphones equipped with the new Soc to find out if it is keeping its promises. Meanwhile, the first benchmarks of the Snapdragon 820, which remain preliminary benchmarks, seem rather encouraging.
