While the Snapdragon 820 was officially introduced just three weeks ago, the first rumors about the Snapdragon 830 are already surfaced. The first assumptions about the future SoC made by analyst Pan Jiutang speak in particular of support for 8GB of RAM.
While we don’t really know the full potential of the new Snapdragon 820 processor, the corridor noises about the successor so far nicknamed MSM998 suggest that it would be engraved in 10 nm thanks to Samsung’s process. In itself, this is the first plausible rumor given that the Korean has already announced to launch mass production of 10 nm processors for next year.
This move from 14 nm to 10 nm was of course doubled by an increase in power. Today, the Snapdragon 820 is something like 40% more powerful than the Snapdragon 810 and is capable of consuming 30% less energy. The same topo should be found with the SD830. For now, analyst Pan Jiutang suggests that this future processor would be able to support 8GB of RAM.
Again, this is a projection that seems reasonable since the Snapdragon 820 supports LPDDR4 1866 MHz dual-channel RAM. Of course, this will also be done provided that 8GB of RAM chips are available by next year. Just to make a small point at this level, Samsung has already launched its production for the 12 Gb (1.5GB) LPDDR4 in 20 nm.
By integrating four (4 x 1.5GB) of this future chip, the arrival of terminals equipped with 6GB of RAM will be allowed. Looking at itself again, it doesn’t seem incongruous to imagine Samsung producing 16 Gb LPDDR4 chips,paving the way for 8GB RAM configurations for 2017.
For now, these are just assumptions. However, these remain plausible and portend great things for the future. Do not rush us however because the road will be long before 2017, let’s already give the Snapdragon 820 a chance to face Exynos 8890 and Kirin 950.
