After a long wait, punctuated by clever marketing operations and a lot of hype, Starfield was officially launched on Tuesday evening for those who could access the five-day early access period, namely those who had pre-ordered the expensive Premium and Constellation editions. Now Microsoft is advertising the number of players who have tried the sci-fi RPG developed by Bethesda Game Studios.
While we don’t have specific data for Xbox concurrent gamers, Xbox Cloud Gaming players, or PC gamers from the Microsoft Store, we do have information about those in the PC version of Starfield who purchased the title from Steam.
Valve’s Steam player stats currently show Starfield as the fifth most played game in terms of concurrent players. According to the most recent data, the peak of 269,177 players was reached on Wednesday, but of course it could improve in the coming days. It should also be said that this result is still far from that of the recent RPG, Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3, which on the same day was able to reach 373,504.
It’s more than possible that we’ll see a higher count of concurrent players on Steam this weekend, as more people will likely have time to play away from work. At the moment, the game is still the best-selling title on Steam, which means that many people have probably decided to buy Starfield instead of pre-ordering it in advance.
Spencer’s post on X also includes a table showing the many positive reviews Starfield received from video game media. It currently has a score of 86 on Metacritic, however many major media outlets such as IGN, GameSpot and PC Gamer, have not been as enthusiastic.
