Suspension of access to OpenAI’s Sora video generation tool following artists’ protests

There is an existing conflict between OpenAI and artists.
Late last year, OpenAI, a San Francisco based artificial intelligence research company, partially shut down its video generating AI model, Sora after its image was leaked by artists collectively known as the Machine to do so. But they were offered an opportunity to start using the tool as a part of its experimentation phase.

An artificial intelligence technology at the center of a scandal
The artists who are so dissatisfied complained to say that they were only used as ‘PR puppets’. , as cited by The Washington Post they accused OpenAI of tricking into participating in an “art washing” scam, to use artists’ works to popularise Sora.

They also noticed that we offer free services of testing as well as feedback, while OpenAI was recently estimated at $150 billion. Further, they complained that all content to be created and handled by Sora has to be pre-approved by OpenAI – a point they argue hinders creativity and is advantageous to the firm’s advertising goals.

A quick reaction from OpenAI
In light of this, OpenAI limited early access to Sora just three hours after leaks. According to Niko Felix, a representative of OpenAI, Sora has been improved thanks to hundreds of artists who contributed to the alpha version of the app. However, the student, another artist in the program, declared that the artists protesting did not represent the views of the majority of them.

Sora in the spotlight
Sora has been the recipient of criticisms pertaining to its training materials even them not being out in the market for the public to access. In March, the OpenAI CTO Mira Murati said she was not certain whether Sora was trained with data from YouTube or other video-sharing platforms. The company was later prompted by the warning from YouTube’s CEO informing him that using his videos to train models was in contravention of the terms of service.
