YouTube experiments with their new automated translation feature
As we anticipated more than a year and a half ago, YouTube has now officially launched the automated AI dubbing option. The platform only posted main and sample videos of this feature, to announce that this feature has been added to the platform.
A service for partner channels
For education or information purposes to hundreds of thousands of participating channels in the YouTube Partner Program, the service is designed to have the creator’s English video translated through an automatic voice-over in French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese or Spanish. Meanwhile, a video in one of these languages could only be dubbed in English. Writers of the video have the chance to review the voice acting before the video goes online.
List of voice acting that has been shared
Three examples of dubbed videos have been shared by YouTube. Two of them have been translated from French into English and the other one has from Hindi to English along with three voice overs in English language. Nevertheless, these English translations look very artificial, and seem to be written by an AI program, although they appear to be absolutely correct. A like experience was encountered in the case of French dubbing.
A tool in the developmental stage
It should be also pointed out that not a single example provided by YouTube involved the tool translating dialogue between two or more individuals. There is a likelihood that Ai dubbing may be inconvenienced by rapidity in speech or interjections. YouTube’s specific warning is that this ‘technology is new’ and, as such, ‘it will not be perfect’.
Lastly, let me say that the platform is still developing since the giant provides AI-based automated dubbing services to partners. All in all there are couple of flaws to this but this new technology will indeed bring new horizons for content creators.
